Your Channel Setup Guide

How to Start a YouTube Channel — The Right Order

Most guides walk you through button locations that change every few months. This one focuses on the decisions and milestones that stay true regardless of how YouTube rearranges its menus.

Milestone 1

Decide before you build

These decisions take five minutes to make carelessly and months to undo. Get them right before you touch YouTube.

Milestone 2

Create and verify your channel

The mechanical setup. Links go to YouTube's own instructions — they keep these current so you don't have to rely on a guide that might be six months out of date.

Milestone 3

Set up your channel presence

First impressions matter. A complete channel profile tells new visitors that this is a real channel worth their time.

A note on perfection: Your channel art, description, and profile photo can all be updated any time with no penalty. Get them good enough and move on. The videos are what matter.
Milestone 4

Understand what happens when you upload

Before you publish your first video, know what each field does. Getting this right is the difference between a video that gets found and one that doesn't.

Milestone 5

Publish your first video

Everything above was preparation. This is the milestone that actually matters.

Milestone 6

After you publish

What to do in the days after your first video goes live — and what not to do.

On monetization: YouTube requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours (or 10 million Shorts views) in the past 12 months to join the Partner Program. Don't make monetization your goal for the first year. Make useful videos consistently. The eligibility follows from that — not the other way around.
